Lowndes’ Carbon Credit invested in NZ’s Future

You can’t get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. Jane Goodall

Lowndes has been working for over a decade to measure our greenhouse gas emissions, develop an emissions management plan, set reduction targets and offset our emissions through the purchase of carbon credits.

Of the many positive impacts organisations can have through achieving carbon neutrality, one meaningful factor is in deciding which scheme to support through the purchase of carbon credits. Lowndes chooses to support the Hinewai Reserve, a 1,250 hectare native forest regeneration project located in Banks Peninsula, Christchurch.

Hinewai is an ecological restoration project that has been underway since the 1980s. The tireless and dedicated workers have brought the land, previously covered in pasture and gorse, back to a beautiful native bush which hosts an ever self-regenerating ecological system. An important use of the money invested in Hinewai from carbon credits is towards the acquisition of neighbouring unfarmed land thus expanding the native forest cover.

Lowndes is proud to be part of a group of organisations helping carbon sequestration and encouraging improvements in biodiversity, water quality and erosion control in the area.

In answer to Jane Goodall’s challenge, the kind of difference Lowndes wants to make is to provide a home for New Zealand’s native species and a place for New Zealanders to visit resulting in restorative benefits to our people as well.
