BDO Wellington to Auckland cycle challenge – RAINING, POURING, and TOURING

Held on Monday 20 March 2017

2017 was the last year of this iconic seven day challenge, and Lowndes was so pleased be involved once again.

The BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge, or W2A, is a great event that challenged individuals and teams of all abilities to ride all or part of the seven day, 12 stage race, riding over 800 kilometres of New Zealand countryside.

Over 250 riders took part, and the Corporate Challenge proved to be popular once again, with 11 teams hitting the line.  The Corporate Challenge appeals to the business community to form a corporate team between workmates to battle it out with other firms from around the country for top bragging rights.  It is about team work and communication (admittedly made more difficult this year with the wind).  Logistics of a week-long stage race are significant, but the W2A was a great team building exercise and chance to execute team tactics (when to play the double point Joker stage?!), and all in the name of great causes.

Starting 12 February, departing from the main street in Lower Hutt with the ultimate goal of Pukekohe on 18 February, unfortunately the great weather of January disappeared.  Wind and rain dominated the week right from the start, making life challenging for the riders and organisers.  Last year’s challenging conditions caused the first ever stage cancellation, and this year unfortunately required the same.  Head and cross winds, torrential rain and even hail – NZ summer??  The safety of all riders was as always the priority.  The riders looked after each other to keep safe, and took the stage cancellations in stride knowing it was the right call.

The race for first place in the Corporate Challenge was down to the wire – a sprint finish down to the line!  Congratulations to the GoBros – ASB Rural, on taking out the win by a single point, and to their chosen charity, St John Ambulance.

Lowndes’ sponsorship relationship with this event began in 2013.  We are proud to have contributed free legal services to the prize pool in each of 2014, 2015, 2016 and again in 2017, with our sponsorship including contributions to not just the charity of the winning team, but also to the charities of the first runner up and to a third team (drawn from all teams entered).  In 2017, St John Ambulance, Fit4Farming and Westpac Rescue Helicopter each won a share of $118,000 of products and services.

Congratulations again to all participants!

Why is Lowndes involved?  Cycling is one of the most popular sport and recreation activities in New Zealand, and we have staff, clients and contacts who are keen road and off-road riders.  The W2A supports a healthy lifestyle, encourages teamwork and communication, and is a great way to give back to our community.  We have been very pleased to sponsor this event over the last few years and to provide much-needed services to the deserving charities.  Why wouldn’t we be involved?!
